What is “Mapping”?
Airport Carbon Accreditation recognises and accredits the efforts of airports to manage and reduce their carbon emissions. There are four levels of certification: ‘Mapping’, ‘Reduction’, ‘Optimisation’ & ‘Neutrality’.
Level 1 Mapping step of Airport Carbon Accreditation requires carbon footprint measurement. To achieve this level of accreditation, an airport has to:
- Determine its ‘operational boundary’ and the emissions sources within that boundary which are Scope 1 and Scope 2 sources, as defined by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol
- Collect data and calculate the annual carbon emissions for the previous year for those sources
- Compile a carbon footprint report
To assist with the preparation of the mapping of airports carbon foot prints Abricon have partnered with threeCCCs, a consultancy specialising in carbon management. Working together with Dr Simon Forsyth a carbon foot print calculator has been integrated with a front-end reporting tool which delivers the necessary level of information fully in accordance with ISO14064 and accreditation requirements.
Experience has shown that data gathering is the ‘expensive’ part of carbon foot printing where consultants’ time would be better spent analysing the information rather than retrieving the data on site. To make this data transfer more readily available threeCCCs have designed a useful tool to facilitate this. The dataCollator lets you go straight at your biggest problem – marshalling your raw data. It lays out exactly what information you need to collect – and gives you a single place to hold it.
This is allows the Airport to gather the information at its own pace and ensures that ’with no gaps’ a full set of data is presented in a format that can be uploaded into the carbon calculator and reporting mechanism. As can be demonstrated with the work undertaken with Tallinn Airport this is a cost effective means of delivery reducing the ‘air miles’ and consultants time. (If a site visit is required to assist with data gathering Abricon would also be pleased to assist).
Working closely with staff at Tallinn Abricon have successfully completed Level 1 and they would be happy to provide a reference for the work undertaken. The Environmental and Aviation safety specialist for Tallinn Airport can be contacted here.
